As a fantastic start to our South America topic, Year 5 had a visit from ‘Dave Shaw’s Roadshow.’ First we learnt about Dave’s adventures in the Amazon Rainforest. He started by showing some living giant spiny stick insects and a milk snake called ‘Carlos’. In addition, he discussed the wildlife and native people he has encountered. These were also shown in a variety of photographs.
It was fascinating to see some of the hunting apparatus used in the Amazon, such as a poison dart blow pipe, which was demonstrated using a balloon as a target. Furthermore, we were presented with a real cocoa pod from the Amazon Rainforest. When Dave opened it up, we got to see the cocoa bean which we learned is responsible for all of our chocolate.
Throughout the rest of the day, we participated in different activities. We created a tribal necklace using hammer beads, sketched tribal artefacts and wildlife and we had an opportunity to touch a millipede, a snake and a tarantula.
On the whole, year 5 have had a brilliant day and it was lovely to share some of the workshop with our parents. We really have learnt a lot!
